Hiring entertainment can feel overwhelming. There are hundreds of performers out there, and almost everyone claims to be the best. So how do you know who’s actually the right fit for your event?

Over the years, I’ve met countless event planners, business owners, and families who all asked similar questions before booking me. Most of them weren’t looking for the cheapest entertainer. They wanted someone who was professional, easy to work with, and capable of creating an experience their guests would remember.

If you’re considering hiring a magician, here are a few things I believe are worth thinking about before making your decision.

Every Event Is Different

One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming every magician performs the same type of show.

That’s simply not true.

Some performers specialize in children’s birthday parties. Others perform only close-up magic during cocktail hours. Some focus on large theaters, while others work almost exclusively at corporate events.

Before booking anyone, ask yourself:

  • Who will be attending?
  • What is the purpose of the event?
  • How large is the audience?
  • Will people be seated or moving around?
  • Do you want a stage show, strolling magic, or both?

The answers to those questions will help narrow down the type of entertainer that’s right for your event.

Experience Matters

Magic is one of those professions where experience makes a tremendous difference.

Every audience reacts differently. Every venue has its own challenges. Every event has unexpected moments.

Experience teaches performers how to adjust without the audience ever noticing.

I’ve performed for corporate banquets, colleges, theaters, fundraisers, private parties, libraries, festivals, and everything in between. That variety helps me adapt quickly and keep the show running smoothly no matter what happens.

Watch Real Performances

Photos are great.

Highlight reels are helpful.

But if possible, watch actual audience reactions.

Are people laughing?

Are they participating?

Are they genuinely surprised?

The audience will tell you more than any promotional paragraph ever could.

When guests are leaning forward, smiling, laughing, and talking about what they’re seeing, that’s a great sign.

Read Reviews Carefully

Reviews aren’t just about five stars.

Read what people actually say.

Do they mention professionalism?

Communication?

Reliability?

Audience engagement?

Those details tell you what it’s really like to work with that performer.

One of the biggest compliments I receive isn’t about a particular illusion. It’s when someone says I made the planning process easy.

As someone planning an event, that’s exactly what you want.

Consider Your Audience

The best entertainment feels like it belongs at your event.

A corporate awards banquet has a different atmosphere than a college welcome week.

A holiday party feels different than a fundraising gala.

A magician should be able to adjust the show to match the audience instead of expecting every audience to adjust to the show.

Customization often makes the difference between a good performance and a memorable one.

Professionalism Is Part of the Show

People often think the show begins when the lights come up.

I think it begins much earlier.

Professional entertainers answer emails promptly.

They arrive early.

They communicate clearly.

They dress appropriately.

They work well with venue staff.

Those things may not be flashy, but they’re incredibly important.

When the entertainment runs smoothly, it allows the event planner to focus on enjoying the evening instead of solving problems.

Ask About Setup

Every performer has different technical requirements.

Some need a stage.

Some bring their own sound system.

Some require very little space.

Before booking anyone, make sure you understand:

  • Setup time
  • Performance space
  • Sound requirements
  • Audience size recommendations

Having those details early helps avoid surprises on event day.

Price Shouldn’t Be the Only Decision

Everyone has a budget.

That’s understandable.

But entertainment isn’t just another line item on an invoice.

It’s often one of the parts of the event guests remember most.

The least expensive option isn’t always the best value.

Instead of asking, “Who’s cheapest?”

Consider asking:

“Who will create the best experience for my guests?”

That’s a very different question.

Find Someone You’ll Enjoy Working With

You’ll probably spend several weeks communicating before the event.

Choose someone who makes that process enjoyable.

Good communication builds confidence.

It also makes planning much easier.

One of my goals with every client is simple.

I want you to feel relaxed knowing the entertainment is taken care of.

Final Thoughts

The right magician does much more than perform tricks.

They help create laughter, conversations, and unforgettable moments that people continue talking about long after the event ends.

Whether you’re planning a corporate event, holiday party, fundraiser, college program, or private celebration, taking a little extra time to choose the right entertainer can make a tremendous difference.

As a nationally touring magician based in Tupelo, Mississippi, I’ve been fortunate to perform for audiences throughout Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, and beyond. Every event is unique, and I approach each one with the goal of giving guests an experience they’ll never forget.
